Following in the Footsteps of World-Class Climbers
Europe’s only dry reef, the Steinplatte in Waidring, is one of the top climbing areas in Tyrol and Salzburg. Climbing legends like Markus Bendler, Chris Sharma, and the Huber brothers are frequent visitors to the 7-kilometer-long rock walls that stretch all the way to Lofer.
You’ll find everything from via ferratas and climbing gardens for beginners and families to sport climbing routes and multi-pitch climbs. The iconic red gondolas of the Steinplatte Waidring cable car take you straight from the Alpegg Chalets to the starting point of your climbing adventure. From there, the Gamssteig trail leads you within minutes to the s'Schuasta Gangl via ferrata (rated C/D), the Wintergarten climbing garden for beginners and advanced climbers, and numerous sport and multi-pitch routes.
If the weather doesn’t cooperate, you can head to one of the nearby indoor climbing options: the Familienland Pillersee climbing hall in St. Jakob in Haus, the felsen.fest climbing center in Saalfelden, or the bouldering gym in St. Johann in Tirol.
At the two-day free climbing camps, SAAC mountain guides provide valuable insights into essential climbing skills such as belaying, rappelling and climbing tecniques. Every climber with sport climbing experience of at least grade 4 to 5 UIAA is welcome to join.
